In a recent interview, India’s most distinguished filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan confessed: “Nobody should suffer a film in a theatre just because someone says it is a great work of art”. T.V.Chandran’s latest Kathavaseshan can be classified as a non-realistic art movie strictly for jury members at some film festival.
Dileep, our comedy superstar wanted peer recognition and an award of some value and prestige. For that he funded Chandran to make this art-house film that somehow fails to strike a chord with an ordinary viewer.

Chandran’s intentions are noble but alas the film as it has been executed is far too dry and dull. Unlike his earlier works like Danny, Sussana and the recent Padom Onnu Oru Vilapam, this film has a contrived plot and is definitely a homage to suicide.

In Kathavaseshan the director grapples with a canvas that required infinitely much more depth and emotional colour than his laboursly pro-left brush strokes, about Gujarat riots. Gopinatha Menon (Dileep), a civil engineer is the protagonist who commits suicide one fine morning. Neither his family nor his fiancée Renuka (Jyothirmayi) knows why he took such an extreme step! However Renuka sets out on a mission to find out the truth behind Gopi’s suicide.

She meets all the people with whom Gopi had something to do with, and finally her quest for the truth takes her on a long journey. She gets an answer from one of his friends (Pandiaraj) that the rape of a young girl who was Gopi’s neighbour during the Gujarat riots had deeply disturbed him. He decides to put an end to his life to show his wrath against the society and his suicidal note said- “For the shame of being alive”

Chandran’s idea was to portray Gopinath as a man whom human relationships were above everything else as he reacted to all injustice in the society but he ends up glorifying suicide. Gopi’s act has not been justified especially in a place like Kerala where suicide rate is the highest. Is there a need for a man to commit suicide to show his protest against the society?

The character of Gopinath is not convincing though Dileep has grasped the complex nuances of doing an art-house film. Jyothirmayi is sincere to her role and so are the rest of the cast. K.G.Jayan’s camera and music of Issac Thomas Kottukapally and M.Jayachandran are first class. How you wish the film on the whole had a positive message to say!
