Chandrolsavam is the zillionth cyclostyled copy of writer-director Ranjith’s earlier Mohanlal films like Devasuram. Aaram Thampuram, Narasimham, Ravana Prabhu among others. The milieu is the same old Varikaseri Mana with people speaking typical Valluvanadan style Malayalam and the usual characters seen in so many films.
We have Mohanlal playing Srihari, a larger-than-life hero who mouths punch dialogues in his inimitable style, has a way with women, enjoys and sings classical music, can speak Sanskrit slokas, has a battalion of friends, is an expert fighter and drinks everything from nadan kallu (toddy) to scotch whisky!!

Ranjit’s characters in Chandrolsavam has a predictable behavior like the police officers ( Spadikam George, Raju), Sai Kumar and Oduvil Unnikrishnan character. But the fans of the superstar still lap it up as the director has created a cast iron image for Mohanlal for the last 10 years which has worked at the box-office. Chirakkal Srihari is a superman and an intellect who goes overboard at times. Ranjit’s failings in Chandrolsavam is that he has tried to create a mass masala with an arty touch that fails to impress.

As usual he seems to be inspired by Hindu mythologies like Mahabharatha and Ramayana as source material. All wars are fought over women and the story of Chandrolsavam moves in that path. Indulekha (Meena) is the object of desire for three close friend’s right from school days. All three are crazy about her and wants to win her over. But Indu loves Sri Hari and the other two Balachandran and Ramanunni (Renjith) hatches different plan to sabotage it. Balachandran manages to marry her but is killed (does not die) on the wedding day by Ramanunni who puts the blame on Sri Hari and sends him to jail.

Balachandran becomes paralysed for life and Indu believes that Sri Hari is behind it. She hates him and our hero goes off to Paris! He comes back after six years to settle scores with the person who is behind his miseries in life not before we understand that he is suffering from cancer! Kushboo plays a cameo role as doctor Durga who comes to the Tharavad to take him for treatment to Delhi (a la Kal Ho Naa Ho).

Meena sans any make-up has a meaty role as Indu and she has given an excellent performance. Tamil actor Renjit as Ramaunni is impressive and stands up to Mohanlal’s performance. The melodious songs of Vidyasagar is hummable and Dakshinamoorthy makes a special appearance as Sri Hari’s ‘guru’. Azhagappan’s camera has etched the lush green locales of Shornur and Ottapalam aesthetically.

And for Mohanlal fans his punchline is “Best Kanna Best”. Watch it just for Mohanlal, he is terrific.

Verdict: Rehash of Rehashes

I am surprised when these malayalee audience will become somewhat good??? When Udayananu Tharam became a super hit, some people said that its not the success of LAL and that of Sreenivasan. But when I saw the movie I knew one thing that after those bad performances by him in the last year he has performed well in the movie.

When Chandrotsavam became a bad movie malayalees are blaming LAL for that, like he had done somethin bad for malayalees. But thats not the case. I have seen the movie and nothing is wrong from Mohan Lal. The problem is coz of the style of direction and story telling. I think Renjith should concentrate on writing and Direction could be given to somebody else. He has tried to say such a fast story from the slower side. The movie just looks like a group of sequences just pasted togethr-the lack of continuity. I think the dialogues in some part also becomes not understandable for a normal man, but anyway the character plpayed by LAL is not a superman type one. He has done his part well, but the totality of the movie is not good, that has happened to it.

I am not blaming LAL for selecting such a story, coz it was directed by some body like SHAJI KAILAS who can mix it up well, it would have become another hit for Malayalees. So don't blame LAl for the movie coz he has done his part well, the only problem with him is his fat body and he has to control it....!!!

hi arunshankar,

well said. actually this is the qualm with malayali pplz mentality, for once they have it all good for this great actor & now wen it is all but comedy n typical story line trend lal got some patch of movies not to b pride with n there goes the media with those hype so as to kill a career.the ppl who got nothin more other than just pass on these flips will make it all bad, so do it happens. But nothing wrong with this actor as he himself makes the presence a genre. lest the pic shall b downstated without the incredible mohanlal.
* its the undercurrent that plays every lal movie with some crazy ppl deliberatly trying to make it look bad if not to the mark or just snatch the bottom line of success from lal's credit and award to someone else. This is the scenario which v cud experience now a days..neverthless this actor is genuine genius wotsoeva the brutal hypes...

cheers arun !

luv,

Sanjay.
