Have you seen sures gopi movies you guys like that kind of fight, like just stand and don't flexible, i don't beleve it, Eventhough sures gopi is good in dialoges that's why he is not out of the movie industry.

Friends, if you guys are so worried about Lal's twisted-moustache image, what do you have to say about the fact that "Vaanaprastham" bombed at the Box Office!? Has any other actor in Malayalam taken the risk to produce a movie like that? They'll stay off good movies and complain that good movies are not doing well at the Box Office! Wow! Typically Malayali Hypocrisy!

Arjun.. you are too much!. Can you say a single box office hit award movie in malayalam? Haaa. And the story behind Lal producing vanaprastham is a long one...

it was a french company that started the production of vanaprastham.. but during that time, the sanctions against india were imposed and so the company had to withdraw from it. Lal had great hopes in the movie, as he expected a Bharath award from it. The movie was started in a big budget as the french company was willing to invest huge amount. Now Shaji was unable to find a producer for the movie, as it was sure that the returns from the movie will be only loss. And in a durbala nimisham Lal agreed to produce the movie, as he desperately needed a Bharath to be in par with Mammootty's 2 Bharath at that time. That is how he became the producer of the movie.

Vaalkashanam : Shaji and Lal are in Venice or Cann or in some place, with the print of Vanaprastham for the film festival. Shaji said to Lal "See the India flag there... :eek: The flag is there just because of our movie.. Isn't it pride to see it .." . Lal replied "Yes. It is a proide to see our flag in venice, because of us.. But the fact that I spent 3 crores to put the flag there make me no happy"..

Moral: Lal has to learn from Mammootty who plays safe by producing TV serials

No prizes for guessing who suits the "too much" tag here. I don't opine on hearsay, Kizhavan! And I didn't know you were part of the Vaanaprastham retinue to Venice and Cannes. Boy! that was a real first hand account! And what is an "Award Movie"? If by that you mean movies which win awards, then wasn't Kireedam a hit? Panchaagni, Amaram, Sargam, Bharatham...all were superhits which won awards as well. And if by that you mean "obscure" and "high-brow", anybody can say that Vaanaprastham was a straight-from-the-heart movie with no pretenses. If people didn't like it, blame it on the people. It's a clear demand-and-supply market happening here. Praja is getting released because Narasimham and Ravanaprabhu were blockbusters. And we are not having more Vaanaprasthams and Vaastuharas 'coz we had empty theatres for them. Admit that!

sure, as a businessman one should see that u don't make too much loss through a film, but i still believe in the art itself, that one should make a film to please the cineasts and yourself, and not just for *violation*violation*violation*violation*violation. and mohanlal in his position now can easily take the risk of making a film like vanaprastham and losing 3 crores, but pleasing himself and true cineasts. in fact i would love to see mohanlal in more independant, different movies (must not all be like vanaprastham though), like mammootty ('ambedkar' (is the spelling correct?) and his latest 'dani'. in fact i like mammootty nowadays for his courage in experimenting, in searching new ways in filmmaking...he's too long there in the business to play the old roles like in rakshasarajavu again and again).
mohanlal should be by now so rich that he can afford some loses...

and the other thing: its right that no award film will ever be a box-office hit, but i think what arjun was saying is this typical malayalee way of thinking: they just simply don't know what they want. can't u guys just imagine why lal is doing these twisted-moustache roles again and again? i'll tell u why: because of the malayalees!
just look at his films after narasimham. narasimham was a big hit, but then criticism came, that mohanlal is doing the same types of films...okay, mohanlal thought, then let us go back to good old fazil and make a nice type of film, a light film, 'life is beautiful'. i admit i haven't seen the film, but what was the reaction of the public (malayalees)? the film was a flop. okay, mohanlal thought, then lets make a thriller type of film, no moustache twisting, but a serious film, and so he went to i.v. sasi and made 'sradha'. this one i saw in the theatre...i must admit this one wasn't some great film (mohanlal was kind of too passive in the film)..but still, it was okay...one could sit and watch...but what happended? the public (malayalees) didn't like this film either.
okay, now mohanlal was getting worried...what do these malayalees now want from him? he tried serious film....no, he tried nice family film...no. okay, then he went to sibi malayil to do 'devadoothan'...again a light film and a bit different (his role as music director and all that). i didn't see this film either, but heard that the malayalees didn't like lal in this role either...again flop.
lal must not have been in the mood for a serious film now, so he made 'kakkakuyil' with priyadarshan (assuming that with priyan he would surely make a hit movie like in the past). i saw this film. it was funny, no question, but lacked a lot in quality. i go with all those criticisms that it was a putting-togehter of old priyan films ('chandralekha' was also of that type)... i had expected a lot more from priyan...but okay, it was just an entertaining film...nothing special...not something that was made for mohanlal specially...anyone else could have done his role. now i'm not sure if this film was a hit or flop...cause heard different reports. but my guess is, people didn't like this film so much.
and now, at this point mohanlal must have understood the taste of the malayalee public, and so he made raavanaprabhu (with all the typical narasimham ingridients in it, like moustache twisting, sharp dialogues etc.)...and now see the miracle: raavaprabhu crossed 100 days!!!

so the whole thing is like this: the mass always loves films like narasimham and raavanaprabhu and make these films hits, few people like u and me, who try to analyze films because they love this media itself, doesn't like these kinds of films cause we think lal should do something else, cause he's becoming repetetive, and wait for intelligent and fine films, which are not coming cause we also think lal shouldn't lose *violation*violation*violation*violation*violation thru making these intelligent, fine 'art-films' (like vanaprastham)--- so it's a vicious circle.

conclusion: we (malayalees) don't know what we want!

In Udayananu Thaaram Srinivasan aanu Thaaram, he has played hero's role, not Mohanlal. Lal was a second hero in that movie. Even if Mohanlal had not acted in that movie also, it would have won as Srinivasan played the hero role.

Mohanlal should not act in Udayananu thaaram. Anybody could do that role.
Only because of Srinivasan's performance, this movie become super hit...
