'Pazhassi Raja' will be an event in film history: Mammootty

Kochi: Malayalam superstar Mammootty says his forthcoming magnum opus 'Pazhassi Raja', said to be the costliest Malayalam film to date, will be an 'event in the history of films'.
There are huge expectations from 'Pazhassi Raja', which sees Mammooty, eminent writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair and director Hariharan coming together for a film after 20 long years.

The actor maintains he is not nervous before the release, scheduled for Friday.

'Is there any use if I'm under pressure now? That time is over and this film is going to be an event in the history of films,' Mammootty told IANS.

The film has been made at a budget of over Rs.25 crore and will be dubbed in Hindi, Telegu and Tamil.

The film is set in the 18th century and
is about Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja of the Kottayam royal family. Irked by the revenue policy of East India Company in Malabar, Pazhassi Raja's was one of the first voices to be raised against British rule in India, though not many people are aware of him outside Kerala.

Vasudevan Nair, Hariharan and Mammootty last teamed up for 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha' and created magic on celluloid. The film fetched the actor a National Award.

'Pazhassi Raja' has music by Illayaraja and the sound effects have been looked after by Oscar winner Resul Pookutty.

The film's release had been delayed and Mammootty is relieved that it will hit theatres soon.

'It has certainly been a very long wait and of course I am relieved that it is finally going to be released,' the actor said.

The State Government has decided to give a tax exemption in the ticket rates of the magnum opus historical ‘Pazhassi Raja’. The government has offered a fifty percent exemption in tax rates for this Mammootty starer, which is the biggest budgeted film ever to be made in Malayalam. Earlier the producers has demanded a hike in ticket rates for quite some days but the government did not pay heed to their demands. And now the fans and opening week viewers who were earlier planning to watch the movie with higher rates than usual can have their watch with lesser ticket charges.

Produced by Gokulam films, the movie is now ready to grace the theatres by this 16. The prints and Digital copies are all ready and the movie opt for the biggest ever release in 125 centres, which means that the movie will be offered at least in a theatre in every 10-15 kms ,all across the state. In the capital city, ‘Pazhassi Raja’ will open in 4 theatres with a combined seating capacity of 4000, while in Ernakulam and Calicut, the movie will open in 3 centres each. The plans of the producers seems to be to grab in, the maximum of the initial collections. And with the hype the movie is getting, its is almost sure that it will earn the biggest of the opening week collections ever registered in Malayalam Box Office.

Pazhassi Raja confirmed on Oct 16!


Producer Gokulam Gopalan has confirmed that his Rs 25 crore big budget Mammootty epic Pazhassi Raja will make it to 125 screens across Kerala from Friday October 16.

Says Gokulam Praveen, the executive producer of the film: “Yes the prints and digital format is ready and Pazhassi Raja will make it to the theatres from this Friday (Oct 16). It is to release in 125 screens across Kerala making it the biggest ever release in the history of Malayalam films.”

The producers are going for saturation release, as every five kilometers there will be a screen in Kerala showing the mammoth epic picture. In Thiruvananthapuram the film is releasing in four screens (New, Sreekumar, Kripa and Dhanya) with a total capacity of nearly 4000!

In Ernakulam, it is releasing in three screens (Sarita, Savitha and Sangeetha), while in Kozhikode it is opening in three huge screens (Apsara, Kairali and Radha).

The idea seems to be to gross the maximum revenue in the first week. The buzz created around the film is huge, so it will take a gigantic opening. The MT Vasudevan Nair- Hariharan-Mammootty trio who last came together in the super hit Vadakkan Veeragatha, nearly two decades ago is back with another potential winner.

Mammootty, speaking on the sidelines of the FEFSI conference in Chennai told reporters: “ Pazhassi Raja will be a landmark movie that is sure going to create history. I’m very happy the way the film has shaped out.”

Meanwhile Pazhassi Raja will have a solo release, as it looks like Angel John will not make it to theatres on the same day. There will be a two week gap between the biggie and others who are now planning to release only on October 31.

MT - His pen has produced some of the most intense characters that Malayalam Cinema has ever seen.

Hariharan - The Director who has created numerous classics and attained maximum success in Malayalam Middle Cinema.

Mammooty - The megastar whose acting superpowers have been on full display for close to three decades.

And now, two decades post their last outing together which created the mesmerizing classic Oru Vadakkan Veera Gatha, the trio unite on the largest canvas that Malayalam cinema has seen.

As I walked in to the cinema hall, I was trying to do something really difficult. I was trying to keep all the baggage of expectation out of the dark hall.
Did I succeed? I would have, had the movie kept me engrossed throughout the length of 3 + hrs and not let my thoughts wander.

Let me start by telling you not what I saw, but what I really missed in those 3 long hours.

I missed the vintage MT sir. I missed the multi layered characters that he creates. The ones that you smile along with, the ones that move you to tears or the ones that leave a lump in your heart. Dialogues that strike you like a thunderbolt, the subtle deep ones that take a scene to a much higher level are all missing

I missed one of my all time favorite directors Hariharan. The Hariharan who can create magic on screen with actors, the one who handles high voltage drama with hugely complicated human relationships is nowhere seen.

I missed Bharath Mammooty. The one performance which could have single handedly carried this epic on his shoulders was missing. I had gone to see the megastar scorch the silver screen on fire as Pazhassiraja, but alas I missed that too.

Sitting through the three long hours how I really wanted the old times back.

The movie starts out with Mohanlal's narration on the current state of things in the Thalassery area.
The East India Company is currently ruling the area. They had helped all the local chieftains battle Tipu Sultan and now they were collecting taxes from these rulers in return for their safety. The Company is now demanding an increase in taxes and were planning to impose several rules which directly had impact on the independence of the locals. Pazhasshiraja had fought Tipu along with the British and was in no mood to agree to the Company's terms. Pazhassi was the only thorn in the Company's plan. The story then moves on to how Pazhassi goes on to form his army and put up a war against the Company.

The major weakness of this epic is the thin storyline. The screenplay is a collection of fights between Pazhassiraja and the Company and how they go about preparing and executing each one. The first half really drags. Things speed up during the latter second half but then its too little too late.

Also, the ending is something that I feel was written with Mammooty's superstar image in mind.

The Direction is fairly good and Hariharan has been able to rally around all his resources and execute skillfully. The guerilla warfare sequences have been shot well.

Cinematography is excellent in certain scenes and very ordinary in others. The Art Direction is first rate. The fight sequences could have been better if the anti gravity jumps had been avoided.

Mammooty fits the role of Pazhassiraja to the T. When he walks into a room, we do feel as if the actual king has stepped in. There is an aura of roy*violation*violation*violationy around him which has been utilized really well. There are no scenes which can really push him as an actor. He is good in what has been given to him.

Sharath has done an excellent job. He is sure to get a lot of fans in kerala post this outing.

Padmapriya & Manoj K Jayan have also done a good job.
Kaniha & Suresh Krishna are ok.

Jagathy, Jagadish and long list of other good actors are totally wasted.

BGM is just passable but re-recording in certain scenes, especially the rainy scenes and post rainy scenes, are awesome.

Verdict - I was really disappointed with the movie. This trip back in time something that I would not recommend.

Trade - I think the max it would end up as an average grosser.

പ്രകൃതിക്ഷോഭവും മഹാവ്യാധികള്‍ പിടിപെട്ടതും പഴശ്ശിപ്പടയെ പ്രതികൂലമായി ബാധിച്ചു. സങ്കേതങ്ങള്‍ മാറിമാറിയുള്ള അവരുടെ പോരാട്ടം ദുര്‍ബലമായി. തലയ്ക്കല്‍ ചന്തുവിനെപ്പോലെയ� �ള്ള പോരാളികള്‍ പൊരുതിമരിച്ചു. എങ്കിലും കീഴടങ്ങാന്‍ പഴശ്ശി തയ്യാറല്ലായിരുന്� �ു. പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ മരണം എങ്ങനെയെന്നുള്ളത� � ഒരു വിവാദവിഷയമാണ്. പലരും പലതാണ് ഇതേപ്പറ്റി പറയുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ ഏറ്റവും വിശ്വസനീയമായ രീതിയില്‍ ‘പഴശ്ശിരാജ’ സിനിമ ഇത് ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്ന� �. പക്ഷേ അത് ഇപ്പോള്‍ പറയുന്നില്ല. തിയേറ്ററില്‍ ആ അനുഭവത്തിന് സാക്ഷിയാകുക.

എം ടി തന്‍റെ രചനാശൈലിയില്‍ കാതലായ മാറ്റം വരുത്തിയ സിനിമയാണ് പഴശ്ശിരാജ. ഈ സിനിമ ‘ഡയലോഗ് ഓറിയന്‍റഡ്’ അല്ല. ഒരു വിഷ്വല്‍ ട്രീറ്റ് എന്നു പറയാം. വടക്കന്‍ വീരഗാഥയില്‍ നമ്മള്‍ കണ്ടതുപോലെ ഡയലോഗുകളുടെ പെരുമഴ ഇതിലില്ല. എന്നാല്‍ രണ്ടാം പകുതിയില്‍ പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെയും എടച്ചേന കുങ്കന്‍റെയും സംഭാഷണങ്ങളുടെ കരുത്തും സൌന്ദര്യവും പ്രേക്ഷകനെ ദേശസ്നേഹത്തിന്‍റ� � പാരമ്യത്തിലെത്തി� �്കും. എം ടിയുടെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച രചനയാ‍ണ് പഴശ്ശിരാജയെന്ന് നിസംശയം പറയാം. വീരഗാഥയില്‍ ചന്തുവിനെ നല്ലവനാക്കിയതു പോലെയുള്ള ഇടപെടലൊന്നും ഈ സിനിമയില്‍ നടത്തിയിട്ടില്ല. എന്നാല്‍ ചരിത്രത്തിന്‍റെ വേലിക്കെട്ടുകള്‍� �്കുള്ളില്‍ നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു ഫിക്ഷന് സാധ്യമായ എല്ലാ കാഴ്ചകളും അദ്ദേഹം സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നു.

മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ ഇതുവരെയുള്ള കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ മലയാളികള്‍ മറന്നേക്കുക. പഴശ്ശി അതിനൊക്കെ മുന്നിലാണ്. ഈ കഥാപാത്രമായി അതിഗംഭീരമായ ഒരു പകര്‍ന്നാട്ടമാണ് മഹാനടന്‍ നടത്തിയിരിക്കുന്� �ത്. ശരീരവും മനസും ഒരുപോലെ അര്‍പ്പിച്ച ഒരു പ്രകടനം. ഒരു തികഞ്ഞ പോരാളിയുടെ മെയ്‌വഴക്കത്തോടെ ക്ലൈമാക്സ് രംഗങ്ങളില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞാടുകയാണ് മമ്മൂട്ടി. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ ഭാവചലനങ്ങള്‍ കേരള സിംഹത്തിന്‍റേതു തന്നെയാണ്, ഒരിക്കലും മമ്മൂട്ടി എന്ന താരത്തെ ഫ്രെയിമില്‍ കാണാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല. ‘പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ പോരാട്ടങ്ങള്‍ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കമ്പനി കാണാന്‍ പോകുന്നതേയുള്ളൂ’ എന്ന് പഴശ്ശിരാജ പറയുമ്പോള്‍ പ്രേക്ഷകശരീരങ്ങള� �ലൂടെ ഊര്‍ജ്ജത്തിന്‍റെ ഒരു മഹാപ്രവാഹം ഇരമ്പിയെത്തുകയാണ� �.

ഹരിഹരന് നൂറില്‍ നൂറുമാര്‍ക്കും നല്‍കാം ഈ പ്രയത്നത്തിന്. അതിഗംഭീരമായ ഒരു സിനിമയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം മലയാളത്തിന് നല്‍കിയിരിക്കുന്� �ത്. ഹോളിവുഡ് ചിത്രങ്ങളോട് കിടപിടിക്കുന്ന ഫ്രെയിമുകള്‍. ഓരോ ഷോട്ടിലും ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ആര്‍ട്ടിസ്റ്റുകള� �‍. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് അഭിനേതാക്കള്‍. കിടിലം കൊള്ളിക്കുന്ന യുദ്ധരംഗങ്ങള്‍. പെയിന്‍റിംഗ് ഷോ പോലെ മനോഹരമായ ഗാനരംഗങ്ങള്‍. ഇത് മലയാളത്തില്‍ ഒരു ഹരിഹരനേ സാധിക്കൂ. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമര ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്കു� �്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ ധീരമായ സമര്‍പ്പണം.

റസൂല്‍ പൂക്കുട്ടിയുടെ ശബ്ദ സംവിധാനത്തെ പരാമര്‍ശിക്കാതെ വയ്യ. ഒരു ഇലയനക്കം പോലും അതിന്‍റേതായ തീവ്രതയോടെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചിരിക്കു� �യാണ് റസൂല്‍. യുദ്ധരംഗങ്ങളിലെ വാള്‍ ചുഴറ്റലുകള്‍ കാതില്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന വികാരത്തിന് റസൂലിന് നന്ദി പറയണം. കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ നിശ്വാസം പോലും അദ്ദേഹം പകര്‍ത്തി നല്‍കുകയാണ്. ഇളയരാജയുടെ സംഗീതവും മനോഹരം. “ആദിയുഷസ്സന്ധ്യ പൂത്തതിവിടെ” എന്ന ഗാനം ആവേശമുണര്‍ത്തും. “കുന്നത്തെ കൊന്നയ്ക്കും പൊന്‍‌മോതിരം” എന്ന ഗാനം പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെയും കൈതേരി മാക്കത്തിന്‍റെയു� � പ്രണയരംഗങ്ങളാണ് ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിരിക� �കുന്നത്. “ഓടത്തണ്ടില്‍ താളം കൊട്ടും കാറ്റില്‍”, “അമ്പും കൊമ്പും കൊമ്പന്‍ കാറ്റും” എന്നീ ഗാനങ്ങളും ഗംഭീരം.

എടച്ചേന കുങ്കനായി ശരത്കുമാര്‍ തിളങ്ങി. ഒരു മലയാള നടന്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നതിനേക്ക� �ള്‍ ഗംഭീരമായി കഥാപാത്രത്തെ ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളാന്‍ ശരത്തിനു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ആദ്യപകുതിയില്‍ പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ നിഴലില്‍ ഒതുങ്ങിപ്പോകുന്ന� �ങ്കിലും അവസാന രംഗങ്ങളില്‍ പഴയം വീടന്‍ ചന്തു(സുമന്‍)വുമൊത ്തുള്ള പോരാട്ട രംഗങ്ങള്‍ ശരത് അവിസ്മരണീയമാക്കി. കൈതേരി അമ്പുവിനോട് തന്‍റെ ഭൂതകാലം വിവരിക്കുന്ന രംഗങ്ങളും ഗംഭീരം.

വാക്കുകളില്‍ ഒതുങ്ങുന്നതല്ല പത്മപ്രിയയുടെ പ്രകടനം. ആക്ഷന്‍ രംഗങ്ങളില്‍ അതീവ മികവു പുലര്‍ത്തി ഈ അഭിനേത്രി. എന്നാല്‍ കനിഹയ്ക്ക് കാര്യമായ പ്രാധാന്യം ചിത്രത്തിലില്ല. സുമന്‍റെ പ്രകടനവും ശരാശരിയില്‍ ഒതുങ്ങുന്നു. കുറുമ്പ്രനാട് രാജാവായി തിലകന്‍ മനോഹരമായി. നെടുമുടി വേണു(മൂപ്പന്‍), ക്യാപ്ടന്‍ രാജു(ഉണ്ണി മൂത്ത), മാമുക്കോയ(അത്താന്� �� ഗുരുക്കള്‍), അജയ് രത്നം(സുബൈദാര്‍ ചേരന്‍), ദേവന്‍(കണ്ണവത്ത് നമ്പ്യാര്‍), ഊര്‍മ്മിള ഉണ്ണി(ചിറയ്ക്കല്‍ തമ്പുരാട്ടി) എന്നിവര്‍ തങ്ങളുടെ വേഷം മികവുറ്റതാക്കി. എന്നാല്‍ ജഗതി(കണാര മേനോന്‍)യും ജഗദീഷും(ഭണ്ഡാരി) പലപ്പോഴും അമിതാഭിനയത്തിലേക� �ക് വഴുതി. ജഗദീഷിന്‍റേത് ഒരു കോമാളിക്കഥാപാത്ര� �ായി മാറി.

പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സംഭാഷണങ്ങളും ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് കമ്പനിപ്പടയെ തുരത്തുന്നതുമൊക്� �െ കുറച്ചുകൂടി സ്വാഭാവികമാക്കാമ� �യിരുന്നു. രാം നാഥ് ഷെട്ടി, വേണു, മനോജ് പിള്ള തുടങ്ങിയവരാണ് ഛായാഗ്രഹണം നിര്‍വഹിച്ചത്. ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സിനിമകളുടെ സാങ്കേതികത്തികവാ� �് ഓരോ രംഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കും ഈ ക്യാമറാമാന്‍‌മാര� �‍ സമ്മാനിച്ചത്. രവി ദേവന്‍റെ ആക്ഷന്‍ സംവിധാനവും എക്സലന്‍റ്‌.

മലയാ‍ള സിനിമ ഇതുപോലെ ഒരു സിനിമ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. ഇത് തിയേറ്ററില്‍ കാണേണ്ട ദൃശ്യ വിസ്മയമാണ്. ഇതുപോലെയൊരു ചിത്രം ലോകത്തിന് നല്‍കാനുള്ള കെല്‍പ്പ് മലയാള സിനിമാലോകത്തിനുണ� �ടെന്ന് തെളിയിച്ചിരിക്കു� �്നു. അണിയറപ്രവര്‍ത്തക� �ോട് നന്ദി മാത്രം പറയാം. വീര പഴശ്ശിയെ ആദരവോടെ വണങ്ങാം. ധീരനായ ഈ പോരാളിയുടെ ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍ ‘ഹരിഹരന്‍ - എം ടി - മമ്മൂട്ടി’ ത്രയത്തിന്‍റെ ഈ മഹാസംരംഭത്തിലൂടെ കൂടുതല്‍ ജ്വലിക്കട്ടെ.

പഴശ്ശിരാജ ചരിത്രമാണ്. തിരുത്തലുകളോ കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്‍ക്ക� �ോ ഉണ്ടാകില്ല. അഗ്നിപോലെ ജ്വലിക്കുന്ന സത്യം. പഴശ്ശിരാജ സിനിമയും അതുപോലെയാണ്. ഇതിന്‍റെ മാറ്റിന് ഇനിയൊരു തിരുത്തലുണ്ടാകില� �ല. മലയാള സിനിമയുടെ നെറുകയില്‍ പൊന്‍‌കിരീടം ചൂടി പഴശ്ശി മഹാരാജാവ് തലയുയര്‍ത്തി നില്‍ക്കും, സിനിമയുള്ള കാലത്തോളം.

നിര്‍മ്മാതാവ് ഗോകുലം ഗോപാലനും നായികമാരിലൊരാളായ പത്മപ്രിയയ്ക്കും ഒപ്പമാണ് പഴശ്ശിരാജ കണ്ടത്. തിയേറ്ററിലെത്തുമ� �പോള്‍ ഒരു സൂപ്പര്‍സ്റ്റാറി� �ോടുള്ള ആരാധനയോടെ പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ ഗോകുലം ഗോപാലന് ജയ് വിളിക്കുന്നതു കാ‍ണാമായിരുന്നു. ഒരു മലയാള സിനിമയ്ക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം 27 കോടി മുടക്കിയെങ്കില്‍, അത് വെറുമൊരു ധൂര്‍ത്തായിരുന്ന� �ല്ലെന്ന് ഈ സിനിമ കാണുമ്പോള്‍ ബോധ്യപ്പെടും. ഓരോ നിമിഷവും ആവേശഭരിതമാക്കുന്� � അത്ഭുത സിനിമയാണ് കേരളവര്‍മ പഴശ്ശിരാജ.

മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ ആരാധകരുടെ തിരക്കും ആഘോഷങ്ങളും തിയേറ്ററിനുള്ളില� �‍ കടക്കാന്‍ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുണ്ടാ� �്കി. സിനിമ തുടങ്ങി ‘പഴശ്ശിരാജ’ എന്ന ടൈറ്റില്‍ തെളിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ രജനീകാന്ത് ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ റിലീസിന് തുല്യമായ പ്രതികരണം. വര്‍ണക്കടലാസുകള്� � കീറിപ്പറത്തുന്നവ� �്‍. സ്ക്രീനിനു മുന്നില്‍ നൃത്തം ചവിട്ടുന്നവര്‍. ആര്‍പ്പുവിളികള്‍. കേരളത്തിലാണോ ഇതു സംഭവിക്കുന്നതെന്� �് അമ്പരന്നു പോയി. മലയാളത്തിലെ ഒരു സൂപ്പര്‍സ്റ്റാര്� � ചിത്രത്തിന് ഇതുവരെ ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതി� �്‍ ഏറ്റവും ഗംഭീരമായ സ്വീകരണം. (മോഹന്‍ലാലിന് നന്ദി എഴുതിക്കാണിക്കുമ� �പോള്‍ വലിയ കൂവല്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്നാണ് പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചത്. എന്നാല്‍ മമ്മൂട്ടി ആരാധകര്‍ കയ്യടിയോടെയാണ് അത് സ്വീകരിച്ചത്. പക്ഷേ, പഴശ്ശിരാജയെ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തിക� �കൊണ്ടുള്ള മോഹന്‍ലാലിന്‍റെ അവതരണം ആരാധകബഹളത്തില്‍ മുങ്ങിപ്പോയി.)

സിനിമ തുടങ്ങി 10 മിനിറ്റിനുള്ളില്� � ആരവങ്ങള്‍ നിലച്ചു. പിന്നെ നിശബ്ദത. പഴശ്ശിത്തമ്പുരാന� �യി മമ്മൂട്ടി നിറഞ്ഞാടിയപ്പോള്� �, ഇത് സിനിമയാണെന്നു പോലും മറന്ന് പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ ത്രസിച്ചിരുന്നു. എം ടിയുടെ കരുത്തുറ്റ സംഭാഷണങ്ങള്‍ തിയേറ്ററില്‍ ഇടിമുഴക്കം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയായിര� �ന്നു. ഹരിഹരന്‍ എന്ന മഹാനായ സംവിധായകന് എല്ലാ ആദരവോടും കൂടി ഒരു നമസ്കാരം പറയാം. സര്‍, താങ്കളുടെ കഠിന പ്രയത്നം വെറുതെയായില്ല.

പഴശ്ശിരാജ വെറുമൊരു സിനിമയല്ല. 1700കളിലെ ഇന്ത്യയെ പുനഃസൃഷ്ടിച്ചിരി� �്കുകയാണ്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഈസ്റ്റിന്ത്യാ കമ്പനിയുടെ അധിനിവേശത്തിന്‍റ� �യും പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ ചെറുത്തുനില്‍പ്പ� �ന്‍റെയും വീരഗാഥ. വയനാടന്‍ കര്‍ഷകരുടെ വിയര്‍പ്പിന്‍റെയ� �ം അധ്വാനത്തിന്‍റെയ� �ം അതിജീവനത്തിന്‍റെ� �ും ചരിത്രം. കുറിച്യപ്പോരാളിക� �ുടെ ഒളിയുദ്ധത്തിന്‍റ� � ഇതിഹാസം. ‘അപമാനവും അധിക്ഷേപവും സഹിച്ച് ഇനി ജീവിക്കാനാവില്ല’ എന്ന് ഉറക്കെ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച് പോരാട്ടത്തിനിറങ്� �ിയ ഒരു സാഹസികന്‍റെയും അയാളെ ജീവനു തുല്യം സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നവരു� �െയും കഥ.

1896ല്‍ ആദ്യ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമരം നടന്നു എന്നതാണ് ചരിത്രരേഖകള്‍ പോലും ഏറ്റവും പ്രാധാന്യത്തോടെ ഉയര്‍ത്തിപ്പിടിച� �ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ അതിനും 200 വര്‍ഷം മുമ്പ് ആദിവാസികളുടെയും കര്‍ഷകരുടെയും സഹായത്തോടെ ഒരു രാജാവ് ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര്‍ക� �കെതിരെ പടനയിച്ചു. കേരളവര്‍മ പഴശ്ശിരാജ. അത് ഒരു രാജ്യം വെട്ടിപ്പിടിക്കു� �്നതിനോ അധികാരം സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നതിന� � ആയിരുന്നില്ല. ജനിച്ച മണ്ണില്‍ ജീവിക്കാനുള്ള അവകാശത്തിനു വേണ്ടിയായിരുന്നു.

ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഈസ്റ്റിന്ത്യാ കമ്പനിക്കെതിരെ ടിപ്പു സുല്‍ത്താന്‍ പോരടിക്കുന്ന കാലം. നികുതിത്തുക ഉയര്‍ത്തിയതോടെ കേരളം കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രതിരോധത്തിലായി. നികുതി ഉയര്‍ത്തിയ നടപടി പഴശ്ശി അംഗീകരിക്കുന്നില� �ല. അദ്ദേഹത്തിനെതിരെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര്‍ നീങ്ങുന്നു. പഴശ്ശിക്കൊട്ടാരം ആക്രമിക്കുന്നതില� �ണ് അത് അവസാനിച്ചത്. എന്നാല്‍, ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര്‍ കരുതിയതുപോലെ വെറുമൊരു രാജാവ് മാത്രമായിരുന്നില� �ല പഴശ്ശി. അദ്ദേഹം തികഞ്ഞ യോദ്ധാവായിരുന്നു. ധര്‍മ്മത്തിനും നീതിക്കും വേണ്ടി പോരടിക്കുന്നവന്‍.

നാടിന്‍റെ ഉയര്‍ച്ചയ്ക്കു വേണ്ടിയുള്ള പോരാട്ടത്തില്‍ സ്വന്തം നഷ്ടങ്ങളെ പഴശ്ശി മറക്കുന്നു. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പടയ്ക്കെതിരെ തുറന്ന യുദ്ധം പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുകയു� � പഴശ്ശിരാജയ്ക്ക് സഹായത്തിനായി കരുത്തനായ പോരാളി എടച്ചേന കുങ്കന്‍(ശരത് കുമാര്‍), പെങ്ങളുടെ ഭര്‍ത്താവ് കൈതേരി അമ്പു(സുരേഷ് കൃഷ്ണ), ആദിവാസിപ്പോരാളി നീലി(പത്മപ്രിയ), തലയ്ക്കല്‍ ചന്തു(മനോജ് കെ ജയന്‍) എന്നിവര്‍ എത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതോടെ കഥ കൂടുതല്‍ ആവേശത്തിലാവുകയാണ� �.

ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പട്ടാളക്കാരെ ആക്രമിച്ച് കൊല്ലുകയും പഴശ്ശി ശക്തിയാര്‍ജ്ജിക്� �ുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. കാര്യം അത്ര പന്തിയല്ലെന്നു കണ്ട ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കമ്പനി ഒരു സന്ധിക്കായി പഴശ്ശിരാജയെ ക്ഷണിക്കുകയാണ്. ഒരു കരാറില്‍ ഒപ്പിട്ടെങ്കിലും അതിലെ വ്യവസ്ഥകള്‍ പാലിക്കാന്‍ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര്‍ തയ്യാറായില്ല. ഇതോടെ പഴശ്ശിരാജ അരയും തലയും മുറുക്കി യുദ്ധത്തിനൊരുങ്ങ� �കയാണ്. പനമരം കോട്ട കീഴടക്കിയതോടെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര്‍ക� �ക് ഇരിക്കപ്പൊറുതിയി� �്ലാതെയായി. അവര്‍ പഴശ്ശിക്കു വേണ്ടി നാടെങ്ങും വലവിരിച്ചു.

പഴശ്ശിരാജ ചരിത്രമാണ്. തിരുത്തലുകളോ കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്‍ക്ക� �ോ ഉണ്ടാകില്ല. അഗ്നിപോലെ ജ്വലിക്കുന്ന സത്യം. പഴശ്ശിരാജ സിനിമയും അതുപോലെയാണ്. ഇതിന്‍റെ മാറ്റിന് ഇനിയൊരു തിരുത്തലുണ്ടാകില� �ല. മലയാള സിനിമയുടെ നെറുകയില്‍ പൊന്‍‌കിരീടം ചൂടി പഴശ്ശി മഹാരാജാവ് തലയുയര്‍ത്തി നില്‍ക്കും, സിനിമയുള്ള കാലത്തോളം.

നിര്‍മ്മാതാവ് ഗോകുലം ഗോപാലനും നായികമാരിലൊരാളായ പത്മപ്രിയയ്ക്കും ഒപ്പമാണ് പഴശ്ശിരാജ കണ്ടത്. തിയേറ്ററിലെത്തുമ� �പോള്‍ ഒരു സൂപ്പര്‍സ്റ്റാറി� �ോടുള്ള ആരാധനയോടെ പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ ഗോകുലം ഗോപാലന് ജയ് വിളിക്കുന്നതു കാ‍ണാമായിരുന്നു. ഒരു മലയാള സിനിമയ്ക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം 27 കോടി മുടക്കിയെങ്കില്‍, അത് വെറുമൊരു ധൂര്‍ത്തായിരുന്ന� �ല്ലെന്ന് ഈ സിനിമ കാണുമ്പോള്‍ ബോധ്യപ്പെടും. ഓരോ നിമിഷവും ആവേശഭരിതമാക്കുന്� � അത്ഭുത സിനിമയാണ് കേരളവര്‍മ പഴശ്ശിരാജ.

മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ ആരാധകരുടെ തിരക്കും ആഘോഷങ്ങളും തിയേറ്ററിനുള്ളില� �‍ കടക്കാന്‍ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുണ്ടാ� �്കി. സിനിമ തുടങ്ങി ‘പഴശ്ശിരാജ’ എന്ന ടൈറ്റില്‍ തെളിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ രജനീകാന്ത് ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ റിലീസിന് തുല്യമായ പ്രതികരണം. വര്‍ണക്കടലാസുകള്� � കീറിപ്പറത്തുന്നവ� �്‍. സ്ക്രീനിനു മുന്നില്‍ നൃത്തം ചവിട്ടുന്നവര്‍. ആര്‍പ്പുവിളികള്‍. കേരളത്തിലാണോ ഇതു സംഭവിക്കുന്നതെന്� �് അമ്പരന്നു പോയി. മലയാളത്തിലെ ഒരു സൂപ്പര്‍സ്റ്റാര്� � ചിത്രത്തിന് ഇതുവരെ ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതി� �്‍ ഏറ്റവും ഗംഭീരമായ സ്വീകരണം. (മോഹന്‍ലാലിന് നന്ദി എഴുതിക്കാണിക്കുമ� �പോള്‍ വലിയ കൂവല്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്നാണ് പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചത്. എന്നാല്‍ മമ്മൂട്ടി ആരാധകര്‍ കയ്യടിയോടെയാണ് അത് സ്വീകരിച്ചത്. പക്ഷേ, പഴശ്ശിരാജയെ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തിക� �കൊണ്ടുള്ള മോഹന്‍ലാലിന്‍റെ അവതരണം ആരാധകബഹളത്തില്‍ മുങ്ങിപ്പോയി.)

പഴശ്ശിരാജ വെറുമൊരു സിനിമയല്ല. 1700കളിലെ ഇന്ത്യയെ പുനഃസൃഷ്ടിച്ചിരി� �്കുകയാണ്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഈസ്റ്റിന്ത്യാ കമ്പനിയുടെ അധിനിവേശത്തിന്‍റ� �യും പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ ചെറുത്തുനില്‍പ്പ� �ന്‍റെയും വീരഗാഥ. വയനാടന്‍ കര്‍ഷകരുടെ വിയര്‍പ്പിന്‍റെയ� �ം അധ്വാനത്തിന്‍റെയ� �ം അതിജീവനത്തിന്‍റെ� �ും ചരിത്രം. കുറിച്യപ്പോരാളിക� �ുടെ ഒളിയുദ്ധത്തിന്‍റ� � ഇതിഹാസം. ‘അപമാനവും അധിക്ഷേപവും സഹിച്ച് ഇനി ജീവിക്കാനാവില്ല’ എന്ന് ഉറക്കെ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച് പോരാട്ടത്തിനിറങ്� �ിയ ഒരു സാഹസികന്‍റെയും അയാളെ ജീവനു തുല്യം സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നവരു� �െയും കഥ.

1896ല്‍ ആദ്യ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമരം നടന്നു എന്നതാണ് ചരിത്രരേഖകള്‍ പോലും ഏറ്റവും പ്രാധാന്യത്തോടെ ഉയര്‍ത്തിപ്പിടിച� �ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ അതിനും 200 വര്‍ഷം മുമ്പ് ആദിവാസികളുടെയും കര്‍ഷകരുടെയും സഹായത്തോടെ ഒരു രാജാവ് ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര്‍ക� �കെതിരെ പടനയിച്ചു. കേരളവര്‍മ പഴശ്ശിരാജ. അത് ഒരു രാജ്യം വെട്ടിപ്പിടിക്കു� �്നതിനോ അധികാരം സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നതിന� � ആയിരുന്നില്ല. ജനിച്ച മണ്ണില്‍ ജീവിക്കാനുള്ള അവകാശത്തിനു വേണ്ടിയായിരുന്നു.

ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഈസ്റ്റിന്ത്യാ കമ്പനിക്കെതിരെ ടിപ്പു സുല്‍ത്താന്‍ പോരടിക്കുന്ന കാലം. നികുതിത്തുക ഉയര്‍ത്തിയതോടെ കേരളം കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രതിരോധത്തിലായി. നികുതി ഉയര്‍ത്തിയ നടപടി പഴശ്ശി അംഗീകരിക്കുന്നില� �ല. അദ്ദേഹത്തിനെതിരെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര്‍ നീങ്ങുന്നു. പഴശ്ശിക്കൊട്ടാരം ആക്രമിക്കുന്നതില� �ണ് അത് അവസാനിച്ചത്. എന്നാല്‍, ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര്‍ കരുതിയതുപോലെ വെറുമൊരു രാജാവ് മാത്രമായിരുന്നില� �ല പഴശ്ശി. അദ്ദേഹം തികഞ്ഞ യോദ്ധാവായിരുന്നു. ധര്‍മ്മത്തിനും നീതിക്കും വേണ്ടി പോരടിക്കുന്നവന്‍.

നാടിന്‍റെ ഉയര്‍ച്ചയ്ക്കു വേണ്ടിയുള്ള പോരാട്ടത്തില്‍ സ്വന്തം നഷ്ടങ്ങളെ പഴശ്ശി മറക്കുന്നു. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പടയ്ക്കെതിരെ തുറന്ന യുദ്ധം പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുകയു� � പഴശ്ശിരാജയ്ക്ക് സഹായത്തിനായി കരുത്തനായ പോരാളി എടച്ചേന കുങ്കന്‍(ശരത് കുമാര്‍), പെങ്ങളുടെ ഭര്‍ത്താവ് കൈതേരി അമ്പു(സുരേഷ് കൃഷ്ണ), ആദിവാസിപ്പോരാളി നീലി(പത്മപ്രിയ), തലയ്ക്കല്‍ ചന്തു(മനോജ് കെ ജയന്‍) എന്നിവര്‍ എത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതോടെ കഥ കൂടുതല്‍ ആവേശത്തിലാവുകയാണ� �.

ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പട്ടാളക്കാരെ ആക്രമിച്ച് കൊല്ലുകയും പഴശ്ശി ശക്തിയാര്‍ജ്ജിക്� �ുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. കാര്യം അത്ര പന്തിയല്ലെന്നു കണ്ട ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കമ്പനി ഒരു സന്ധിക്കായി പഴശ്ശിരാജയെ ക്ഷണിക്കുകയാണ്. ഒരു കരാറില്‍ ഒപ്പിട്ടെങ്കിലും അതിലെ വ്യവസ്ഥകള്‍ പാലിക്കാന്‍ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര്‍ തയ്യാറായില്ല. ഇതോടെ പഴശ്ശിരാജ അരയും തലയും മുറുക്കി യുദ്ധത്തിനൊരുങ്ങ� �കയാണ്. പനമരം കോട്ട കീഴടക്കിയതോടെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര്‍ക� �ക് ഇരിക്കപ്പൊറുതിയി� �്ലാതെയായി. അവര്‍ പഴശ്ശിക്കു വേണ്ടി നാടെങ്ങും വലവിരിച്ചു.

ഒരു പ്രത്യേകതരം യുദ്ധമായിരുന്നു പഴശ്ശി ആസൂത്രണം ചെയ്തത്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പടയുടെ സാങ്കേതിക മികവിനെയും ആധുനിക ആയുധങ്ങള്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള യുദ്ധമുറകളെയും ചെറുത്തുതോല്‍പ്പ� �ക്കുന്ന ഒരു പുതിയ അടവ് - ഒളിയുദ്ധം. കുറിച്യപ്പടയുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ പഴശ്ശിരാജ അത് സാധ്യമാക്കി. അത്താന്‍ ഗുരുക്കളുടെയും ഉണ്ണിമൂത്തയുടെയു� �ൊക്കെ പോരാട്ടങ്ങളെ ഏകോപിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ� �ട് പഴശ്ശിരാജ ആഞ്ഞടിച്ചു. ഇതോടെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഈസ്റ്റിന്ത്യാ കമ്പനിയുടെ അടിത്തറയിളകാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. എങ്ങനെയും പഴശ്ശിയെ കുടുക്കാന്‍ അവര്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചു.

പ്രകൃതിക്ഷോഭവും മഹാവ്യാധികള്‍ പിടിപെട്ടതും പഴശ്ശിപ്പടയെ പ്രതികൂലമായി ബാധിച്ചു. സങ്കേതങ്ങള്‍ മാറിമാറിയുള്ള അവരുടെ പോരാട്ടം ദുര്‍ബലമായി. തലയ്ക്കല്‍ ചന്തുവിനെപ്പോലെയ� �ള്ള പോരാളികള്‍ പൊരുതിമരിച്ചു. എങ്കിലും കീഴടങ്ങാന്‍ പഴശ്ശി തയ്യാറല്ലായിരുന്� �ു. പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ മരണം എങ്ങനെയെന്നുള്ളത� � ഒരു വിവാദവിഷയമാണ്. പലരും പലതാണ് ഇതേപ്പറ്റി പറയുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ ഏറ്റവും വിശ്വസനീയമായ രീതിയില്‍ ‘പഴശ്ശിരാജ’ സിനിമ ഇത് ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്ന� �. പക്ഷേ അത് ഇപ്പോള്‍ പറയുന്നില്ല. തിയേറ്ററില്‍ ആ അനുഭവത്തിന് സാക്ഷിയാകുക.

എം ടി തന്‍റെ രചനാശൈലിയില്‍ കാതലായ മാറ്റം വരുത്തിയ സിനിമയാണ് പഴശ്ശിരാജ. ഈ സിനിമ ‘ഡയലോഗ് ഓറിയന്‍റഡ്’ അല്ല. ഒരു വിഷ്വല്‍ ട്രീറ്റ് എന്നു പറയാം. വടക്കന്‍ വീരഗാഥയില്‍ നമ്മള്‍ കണ്ടതുപോലെ ഡയലോഗുകളുടെ പെരുമഴ ഇതിലില്ല. എന്നാല്‍ രണ്ടാം പകുതിയില്‍ പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെയും എടച്ചേന കുങ്കന്‍റെയും സംഭാഷണങ്ങളുടെ കരുത്തും സൌന്ദര്യവും പ്രേക്ഷകനെ ദേശസ്നേഹത്തിന്‍റ� � പാരമ്യത്തിലെത്തി� �്കും. എം ടിയുടെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച രചനയാ‍ണ് പഴശ്ശിരാജയെന്ന് നിസംശയം പറയാം. വീരഗാഥയില്‍ ചന്തുവിനെ നല്ലവനാക്കിയതു പോലെയുള്ള ഇടപെടലൊന്നും ഈ സിനിമയില്‍ നടത്തിയിട്ടില്ല. എന്നാല്‍ ചരിത്രത്തിന്‍റെ വേലിക്കെട്ടുകള്‍� �്കുള്ളില്‍ നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു ഫിക്ഷന് സാധ്യമായ എല്ലാ കാഴ്ചകളും അദ്ദേഹം സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നു

മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ ഇതുവരെയുള്ള കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ മലയാളികള്‍ മറന്നേക്കുക. പഴശ്ശി അതിനൊക്കെ മുന്നിലാണ്. ഈ കഥാപാത്രമായി അതിഗംഭീരമായ ഒരു പകര്‍ന്നാട്ടമാണ് മഹാനടന്‍ നടത്തിയിരിക്കുന്� �ത്. ശരീരവും മനസും ഒരുപോലെ അര്‍പ്പിച്ച ഒരു പ്രകടനം. ഒരു തികഞ്ഞ പോരാളിയുടെ മെയ്‌വഴക്കത്തോടെ ക്ലൈമാക്സ് രംഗങ്ങളില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞാടുകയാണ് മമ്മൂട്ടി. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ ഭാവചലനങ്ങള്‍ കേരള സിംഹത്തിന്‍റേതു തന്നെയാണ്, ഒരിക്കലും മമ്മൂട്ടി എന്ന താരത്തെ ഫ്രെയിമില്‍ കാണാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല. ‘പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ പോരാട്ടങ്ങള്‍ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കമ്പനി കാണാന്‍ പോകുന്നതേയുള്ളൂ’ എന്ന് പഴശ്ശിരാജ പറയുമ്പോള്‍ പ്രേക്ഷകശരീരങ്ങള� �ലൂടെ ഊര്‍ജ്ജത്തിന്‍റെ ഒരു മഹാപ്രവാഹം ഇരമ്പിയെത്തുകയാണ� �.

ഹരിഹരന് നൂറില്‍ നൂറുമാര്‍ക്കും നല്‍കാം ഈ പ്രയത്നത്തിന്. അതിഗംഭീരമായ ഒരു സിനിമയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം മലയാളത്തിന് നല്‍കിയിരിക്കുന്� �ത്. ഹോളിവുഡ് ചിത്രങ്ങളോട് കിടപിടിക്കുന്ന ഫ്രെയിമുകള്‍. ഓരോ ഷോട്ടിലും ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ആര്‍ട്ടിസ്റ്റുകള� �‍. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് അഭിനേതാക്കള്‍. കിടിലം കൊള്ളിക്കുന്ന യുദ്ധരംഗങ്ങള്‍. പെയിന്‍റിംഗ് ഷോ പോലെ മനോഹരമായ ഗാനരംഗങ്ങള്‍. ഇത് മലയാളത്തില്‍ ഒരു ഹരിഹരനേ സാധിക്കൂ. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമര ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്കു� �്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ ധീരമായ സമര്‍പ്പണം.

റസൂല്‍ പൂക്കുട്ടിയുടെ ശബ്ദ സംവിധാനത്തെ പരാമര്‍ശിക്കാതെ വയ്യ. ഒരു ഇലയനക്കം പോലും അതിന്‍റേതായ തീവ്രതയോടെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചിരിക്കു� �യാണ് റസൂല്‍. യുദ്ധരംഗങ്ങളിലെ വാള്‍ ചുഴറ്റലുകള്‍ കാതില്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന വികാരത്തിന് റസൂലിന് നന്ദി പറയണം. കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ നിശ്വാസം പോലും അദ്ദേഹം പകര്‍ത്തി നല്‍കുകയാണ്. ഇളയരാജയുടെ സംഗീതവും മനോഹരം. “ആദിയുഷസ്സന്ധ്യ പൂത്തതിവിടെ” എന്ന ഗാനം ആവേശമുണര്‍ത്തും. “കുന്നത്തെ കൊന്നയ്ക്കും പൊന്‍‌മോതിരം” എന്ന ഗാനം പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെയും കൈതേരി മാക്കത്തിന്‍റെയു� � പ്രണയരംഗങ്ങളാണ് ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിരിക� �കുന്നത്. “ഓടത്തണ്ടില്‍ താളം കൊട്ടും കാറ്റില്‍”, “അമ്പും കൊമ്പും കൊമ്പന്‍ കാറ്റും” എന്നീ ഗാനങ്ങളും ഗംഭീരം.

എടച്ചേന കുങ്കനായി ശരത്കുമാര്‍ തിളങ്ങി. ഒരു മലയാള നടന്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നതിനേക്ക� �ള്‍ ഗംഭീരമായി കഥാപാത്രത്തെ ഉള്‍ക്കൊള്ളാന്‍ ശരത്തിനു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ആദ്യപകുതിയില്‍ പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ നിഴലില്‍ ഒതുങ്ങിപ്പോകുന്ന� �ങ്കിലും അവസാന രംഗങ്ങളില്‍ പഴയം വീടന്‍ ചന്തു(സുമന്‍)വുമൊത ്തുള്ള പോരാട്ട രംഗങ്ങള്‍ ശരത് അവിസ്മരണീയമാക്കി. കൈതേരി അമ്പുവിനോട് തന്‍റെ ഭൂതകാലം വിവരിക്കുന്ന രംഗങ്ങളും ഗംഭീരം.

വാക്കുകളില്‍ ഒതുങ്ങുന്നതല്ല പത്മപ്രിയയുടെ പ്രകടനം. ആക്ഷന്‍ രംഗങ്ങളില്‍ അതീവ മികവു പുലര്‍ത്തി ഈ അഭിനേത്രി. എന്നാല്‍ കനിഹയ്ക്ക് കാര്യമായ പ്രാധാന്യം ചിത്രത്തിലില്ല. സുമന്‍റെ പ്രകടനവും ശരാശരിയില്‍ ഒതുങ്ങുന്നു. കുറുമ്പ്രനാട് രാജാവായി തിലകന്‍ മനോഹരമായി. നെടുമുടി വേണു(മൂപ്പന്‍), ക്യാപ്ടന്‍ രാജു(ഉണ്ണി മൂത്ത), മാമുക്കോയ(അത്താന്� �� ഗുരുക്കള്‍), അജയ് രത്നം(സുബൈദാര്‍ ചേരന്‍), ദേവന്‍(കണ്ണവത്ത് നമ്പ്യാര്‍), ഊര്‍മ്മിള ഉണ്ണി(ചിറയ്ക്കല്‍ തമ്പുരാട്ടി) എന്നിവര്‍ തങ്ങളുടെ വേഷം മികവുറ്റതാക്കി. എന്നാല്‍ ജഗതി(കണാര മേനോന്‍)യും ജഗദീഷും(ഭണ്ഡാരി) പലപ്പോഴും അമിതാഭിനയത്തിലേക� �ക് വഴുതി. ജഗദീഷിന്‍റേത് ഒരു കോമാളിക്കഥാപാത്ര� �ായി മാറി.

പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സംഭാഷണങ്ങളും ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് കമ്പനിപ്പടയെ തുരത്തുന്നതുമൊക്� �െ കുറച്ചുകൂടി സ്വാഭാവികമാക്കാമ� �യിരുന്നു. രാം നാഥ് ഷെട്ടി, വേണു, മനോജ് പിള്ള തുടങ്ങിയവരാണ് ഛായാഗ്രഹണം നിര്‍വഹിച്ചത്. ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സിനിമകളുടെ സാങ്കേതികത്തികവാ� �് ഓരോ രംഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കും ഈ ക്യാമറാമാന്‍‌മാര� �‍ സമ്മാനിച്ചത്. രവി ദേവന്‍റെ ആക്ഷന്‍ സംവിധാനവും എക്സലന്‍റ്‌.

മലയാ‍ള സിനിമ ഇതുപോലെ ഒരു സിനിമ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. ഇത് തിയേറ്ററില്‍ കാണേണ്ട ദൃശ്യ വിസ്മയമാണ്. ഇതുപോലെയൊരു ചിത്രം ലോകത്തിന് നല്‍കാനുള്ള കെല്‍പ്പ് മലയാള സിനിമാലോകത്തിനുണ� �ടെന്ന് തെളിയിച്ചിരിക്കു� �്നു. അണിയറപ്രവര്‍ത്തക� �ോട് നന്ദി മാത്രം പറയാം. വീര പഴശ്ശിയെ ആദരവോടെ വണങ്ങാം. ധീരനായ ഈ പോരാളിയുടെ ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍ ‘ഹരിഹരന്‍ - എം ടി - മമ്മൂട്ടി’ ത്രയത്തിന്‍റെ ഈ മഹാസംരംഭത്തിലൂടെ കൂടുതല്‍ ജ്വലിക്കട്ടെ.
