Kana Kandein -review- a superb movie

by sify.com
Director

Producer
P.L.Thenappan
Cast
Srikanth, Pritviraj ,Gopika,vivek

K.V.Anand’s the noted cinematographer’s directorial debut Kana Kandein is an engrossing romantic thriller. Anand is a welcome addition to the roster of directors like Shankar, Gautham Menon and Selvaraghavan who gives importance to packaging their story intelligently.
In Kana Kandein, Anand has weaved childhood friendship blossoming into a beautiful relationship against the backdrop of a chilling thriller. The on-screen chemistry between Srikanth and Gopika is a treat to watch especially in the first half. And Pritviraj the tall, handsome bad guy is a revelation. Other highlights are Vivek and his comedy track that brings the house down plus the outstanding music and background score of Vidyasagar.

Bhaskar(Srikanth) is a research student who goes to his village to attend the wedding of his childhood friend Archana (Gopika). But the marriage does not take place and Bhaskar is forced to bring her to Chennai where they live together. But slowly both of them reveal their deep love for each other which they were never able to express for years.

Bhaskar becomes successful in his research to make saline sea water into drinking water and he gets a doctorate for it. However, he is not willing to sell the patentcy for the invention to big players for an astronomical amount. Bhaskar wants the ordinary man to enjoy the benefit of it as hence tries to give a proposal to the government which does not materialize due to corruption in our system.

Archana however is not willing to give up and motivates her husband to start a plant on their own and prove to the world but lack of finance is their main problem. It is at this time that Archana meets Madan (Pritviraj) a sophisticated, businessman and smooth talker who was her senior in college. Soon Madan promises to help the couple who trusts him blindly. But Madan is not what you see as he is a cold blooded *violation*violation*violation*violation*violation lender who turns out to be ruthless and mean. All this leads to a dark and potent twist in the tale and a chilling climax.

Srikanth as Bhaskar pitches in with his best-ever performance as a research student and Gopika is natural and has been photographed well. Her large eyes are her biggest asset and she knows how to use them to her advantage. Be it her romantic scenes with her husband or her outburst at Madan’s office, she is superb. Pritiviraj as Madan is riveting, mean, diabolic and malevolent he plays the fiend to perfection. Vivek’s comedy is superb and Vidyasagar’s songs and Anand’s picturisation along with Sounderajan’s camera is simply amazing.

On the downside the film is a bit lengthy in the second half and some loopholes in the story. Still Kana Kandein is a riveting thriller that is worth your time and *violation*violation*violation*violation*violation.

Verdict: Good

Kana Kanden by cinesouth.com

K.V.Anand, have joined in the list of people, who had become director after having been a cameraman in the first place.

A poor mother toils hard by carrying water to households, to give education to her son, and brought him up to be a good man. He is Srikanth, who researches in the area of desalination of seawater, to make it drinkable and he succeeds in this. But either the Government or Banks come forward to help him in this, to eliminate the drinking water problem of the people. His friend Gopika, who stays with him after coming out of her household because they tried to marry her with a person whom she didn't like. She is the one and only person, who stand in support in his efforts. They become lovers and get married. Meanwhile, Gopika meets her former college mate Prithiviraj. He had become a big business consultant. He also helps Srikanth by providing financial support for his research. But in reality, he is shylock, and a dada. Not knowing about this, Srikanth and Gopika fell into his trap. He prepares an agreement, by which, Srikanth have to handover the secret document if he can't pay the *violation*violation*violation*violation*violation back. Whey they came to know the truth, the noose had already tightened. Whether Srikanth and Gopika is able to come out of this trap or not forms the rest of the story.

Srikanth who has been acting in action oriented films till recently, also acting as caring lover in this film along with action. Both have acted 'very close' in love scenes. Gopika who is acting in a Tamil film after the film 'Autograph' had attracted the audience very nicely in this film. In the scene, where she would enquire the 'Gulphi' Ice vender about the reason for selling it during midnight innocently, and the way she show the feeling after having understood the reason, is just beautiful.

'Gulphi' is another 'Drumstic' matter.

In another scene, where Srikanth would get very angry at Prithiviraj, even without realizing the background of Prithiviraj. Gopika would chide him saying "You are an educated person, but behaving like a rowdy". We can enjoy her performance in this scene.

The high light of the film is the *violation*violation*violation*violation*violationlender character, who charges exorbitant interest. The way the Malayalam actor Prithiviraj had done this is indeed superb, real good performance indeed. Its been quite a long time since the Tamil film field had seen a Villain who give this kind excellence performance by expressing minute subtle expressing effectively.

There is a scene, in which Srikanth would smash all the article in the office of Prithiviraj in anger. Prithiviraj would coolly calculate the price of those things and add their price with the original loan amount. Then he would start charging interest on that amount from then on. It is indeed an effective show of villanic way of dealing things.

Vivek's comedy is just wonderful. But with overt sexual intonations, the word 'condom' is being used very liberally as in the family planning advertisement. He would lie to his wife that he is working in T.V. Station. To make it true, when Jeyalalitha speaks in the T.V, he would intervene in the middle, and would call his wife over the cell phone to ask her watch the program, is just superb comedy.

But his lie to get a cup of coffee is just too much. Vanitha had aced as the mother of Gopika. Shalini had acted as the women who suffer in the hands of Prithiviraj.

K.V.Anand had to be appreciated for having selected a different back ground for story for the film. He had taken the movie with great care. This becomes evident, in the scene, where Prithiviraj car would burn. But the dog will come out of it first when the door open. It is very absurd that Gopika abort her child, fearing Prithiviraj. She even says "I have 'saved' our child from Prithiviraj".

Subha have written the story and dialogues. Kanal Kannan's stunts are very good. Sounderajan's camera work is just superb. Especially lightings are soothing. Vidhyasagar's songs will become hit. The song 'Kalai Arumbi' is a beautiful melody.

'Kana Kanden' -Dream of early morning.

kanakandain - Review by indiaglitz.com

Kanaa Kanden is a movie with a strong story with romance at its base. From a smooth take off, it moves ahead to unexpected quarters with suspense and thrills, but ends rather tamely.

Director K V Anand, however, deserves credit for trying out a new storyline, and Malayalam actor Prithviraj making his debut in Tamil hogs the limelight with his powerful and poised performance in a negative role.

After a long time one could see Srikanth as a romantic hero while Gopika, who plays his wife, has a meaty role unlike in other run of the mill films.

The movie begins with Bhaskar (Srikanth) visiting his village for his friend Archana's (Gopika) wedding. But he ends up in returning to city with Gopika herself for she comes to know of the bridegroom's bad past in the village just before the marriage.

Friends since their childhood days, the couple begins to live in a small house owned by Vivek in Chennai. Meanwhile, Bhaskar, a research scholar in Chemistry, succeeds in coming out with a prototype of a desalination plant which he wants to give to the government and solve the water crisis in Chennai.

He eventually gets discouraged by the government authorities and even the State Minister. He then decides to prove everyone wrong and plans to set up his own desalination plant based on the methods of his research. Along with Archana, he runs from pillar to post for loan. In between, the couple falls in love and ties the knot.

Enters Madan (Prithviraj), a college mate of Archana, Madan gets acquainted with their family. Coming to know of their troubles, the rich Madan volunteers to help them and even lends *violation*violation*violation*violation*violation. All troubles begin only now. Madan happens to be a 'business consultant' who lends *violation*violation*violation*violation*violation to companies, corporates and individuals at exorbitant rates of interest and uses his might to recover them.

In Bhaskar's case, he begins to trouble them demanding his *violation*violation*violation*violation*violation back and threatens to take over the research works of Bhaskar with which he aspires to make a huge sum.The movie after several twists and turns ends on a happy note.

Srikanth has played his part well. With enough scope for romance and action, he enjoys the role. Gopika has taken the glamour route and seems to have gone liberal in romantic scenes. At the same time, towards the second half, she turns fiery, and deserves a special mention for that.

All credit should go to Prithviraj. He has done his role not just with ease but also stamped his class all through. He seems to have fitted the character well and his handsome looks combined with his villainous deeds make him a treat to watch. Vivek has played his part well. However too much of double meaning dialogues from him is slightly surprising.

Couple of tunes by Vidyasagar sounds hummable. K V Anand in the company of cinematographer Soundararajan has given a movie which is a good time pass.

A good try by Anand in his debut directorial venture.

K.V.Anand’s Kana Kandein has taken an above average opening and the word-of-mouth is excellent which can help the film in a big way. Everyone attributes the success of the film to its lead characters but it is Pritviraj who is walking away with all the applause from the audiences in theatres.
For Pritviraj, the young hero of Malayalam it is a dream role, as he has not been able to reach the top there after doing more than a dozen films. In Kana Kandein, he is the scene stealer as Madan the sophisticated, dashing business man who changes his colour in the second half of the film into a menacing villain who uses his brain more than his brawns.

A new ‘bad man’ has been born in Tamil cinema at a time where there is a dearth for mean villains. He is truly “evil personified” in the film and added to that he can shake a leg as proved in that chartbuster ”Iyya Ramaiah….” song. Says K.V.Anand: “He is a brilliant actor whose potential is yet to be tapped”.

Pritviraj is however on cloud nine as his first Tamil film is getting him rave reviews. Said Pritvi to Sify.com: “I owe it to Anand sir’s script”.

Malayalam actor Prithviraj is brimming with joy as his negative role in his debut Tamil venture Kanaa Kanden has won positive appreciation from all.

But he was under no doubt right from the start.

"I was confident that this would make it big', says Prithviraj, who is also playing an important role in director Charan's Idhaya Thirudan starring Jeyam ravi in the lead role.

"When director K V Anand narrated the story to me, I knew that if I could give my best, I can make it big. Thank Almighty, it has become a reality".

But Prithvi is a good sport when he says "due credit should be given to actor Srikanth, who encouraged me well on the sets".

I have lot of offers coming my way in both Tamil and Malayalam. I will be very choosy about my roles".

Yes, he can afford to be choosy.

Kana Kandein rocks!

Shobha Warrier | May 16, 2005 19:22 IST

K V Anand, the noted cinematographer and debutant director of the Tamil film Kana Kandein, told me, "mine is a commercial film with five songs and three fights."

It amused me.

But after watching the film, you feel the question of whether it is a commercial or arty film is immaterial. All that matters is making a good, well packaged product.

On that score, K V Anand has succeeded in making an extremely watchable, highly thrilling film with a ' different' story. And some very lovable and believable characters – something rarely seen in Indian cinema today.

The film is the story of Bhaskar, a PhD scholar in Chennai, with a tested and patented idea to generate drinking water from seawater at a lower cost than is possible today. The bureaucracy turns down his idea to build a desalination plant. As a clerk in the government office puts it, they 'already have proposals from L&T, Reliance and many such companies..'

Bhaskar decides to build his own plant so that the common man can benefit from his groundbreaking invention.

Yes, he is the typical idealist seen mostly (and, according to hardened cynics, only) in Indian cinema. But Srikanth manages to pull the role off without being boring or mouthing clichés.

Bhaskar's close-friend-turned-wife, Archana (Gopika), arranges the funds by borrowing from her college mate, Madan (Prithviraj), who is a big businessman.

The first half of the film just breezes through, with some extremely refreshing and uninhibited love scenes between Bhaskar and Archana. As far as I can remember, the last time one saw such interesting, realistic love scenes were in Mani Ratnam's Alai Paayuthey.

Like Madhavan and Shalini in Alai Paayuthey, Srikanth and Gopika appear perfectly in love. It is a treat to watch them together on screen.

Similarly, I would say K V Anand's song picturisation is as good as Mani Ratnam's, who I rate as the best in that department.

If the first half of the film is full of romance, interspersed with the struggle Bhaskar goes through (though it is not of the kind that attempts to garner the audience's sympathy), the second half is thrilling, shocking and even intimidates you at times.

The thrills begin when Madan, the suave businessman, turns out to be a completely merciless villain. He goes to any extent of torturing the couple to get his *violation*violation*violation*violation*violation back. And he does so with a smirk.

The role of Madan, played by Prithviraj, will soon be a benchmark for new age villains. Tall, suave and handsome, Madan is perpetually well groomed and his behaviour is immaculate. Conversely, Bhaskar, the hero, loves the occasional beer and is shabby and unshaven. Bhaskar is easily provoked into anger, Madan never even raises his voice.

If Prithviraj is lovable and sophisticated in the first half, he is menacing and intimidating in the second half -- but with a constant naughty smile on his face. Anand said he approached almost all the top Tamil heroes with this role, but all of them refused. One can only pity those actors, because they lost a golden opportunity to perform.

The two main female characters in the film, Archana, and Vasantha -- Bhaskar's research guide -- are also not typical screen females. Vasantha's role could have become the typically fanatical, slightly elderly research guide, ready to 'eat' any young man alive, but she is flirtatious, not sex-starved.

Archana is a young wife who calls her workaholic husband home to make love – something that one doesn't often witness in the archetypal chaste heroine.

On the whole, K V Anand has made a very good romantic thriller.
