Review - Kochi Rajavu

Wanted desperately- A story! Just wondering what writer-director Johhny Antony was thinking while writing the story of Kochi Rajavu? Did he ever think that our Dileep could pass off as a Rajnikanth of Malayalam? Alas the film ends up as a pale imitation of Baasha, the mass masala entertainer.
Our heart goes out to poor Dileep after watching Kochi Rajavu, as an actor and distributor. There is nothing wrong in being inspired from movies of other languages, but the idea has to be nourished and executed carefully if it has to click with the Kerala audience. And what happened to Dileep who was always considered to be a man with great capacity to choose scripts as he himself was an assistant director?

Surayanarayana Varma (Dileep) is a member of the royal family of Kochi. His father (Murali) is an officer in the Home ministry and Surya is a student leader in Law College. He gets involved in a violent agitation that results in the buses of Karimparakkal family getting damaged. Surya is in love with Aswathy (Kavya) a member of the same family which results in some misunderstandings. Meanwhile Surya’s father threatens and throws him out of the house and he becomes an auto driver!

On the day he plans to elope with Aswathy, Surya accidentally kills one of her relative (Irshad) and lands up in jail. After he comes out he resumes his education in Chennai Law College, where he meets Meenakshi (Rambha) daughter of political kingmaker Parthasarathy (Vijayan). When his marriage with Meenakshi is fixed, Surya comes to know that Aswathy is still waiting for him and hence he comes back to Kochi. But by the time the nasty politician joins hands with Karimparakkal family baying for Surya’s blood!

It is one of Dileep’s worst films in recent times. The story is illogical and the presentation is idiotic. Johnny Antony thinks that the audience will accept Dileep as an action hero, ends up with egg on his face. Some of the old comedy tracks of CID Moosa is rehashed to make it a Kichadi.

Vidyasagar’s music is a major disappointment as there is not even one hummable song. However Dileep shines in comedy scenes, a department in which he is unbeatable. Harisri Asokan hams throughout and is a pain to watch. Jagathy is stiff, Kavya and Rambha sleep walks. On a whole, an avoidable film.

Vishu films bomb!

By Moviebuzz
Sunday, 17 April , 2005, 12:07

All Vishu releases have collapsed at the Kerala box-office! Even Mohanlal’s Chandrolsavam did not take a decent opening and is said to be a flop. The other two releases Kochi Rajavu and Alice In Wonderland have also been written off by the trade.
What went wrong? Sify.com understands that in spite of having big stars like Mohanlal, Dileep and Jayaram these films failed to impress due to lack of content and were pale rehashes of earlier hits. The audience felt cheated and thought that they were taken for royal ride by the stars. The rumour is that SMS messages were sent out pointing out the drawbacks of a particular film which they felt should be avoided by the audience.

Meanwhile Udayananu Tharam and Thommanum Makkalum have benefited from this, as collections are still impressive. These films are still attracting family audience and there is a huge repeat audience in Trivandrum and Ernakulam.

Vishu releases nosedive
- 18.04.2005
All the three films that were released on Vishu have flopped at the box office.

'Chandrotsavam', 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Kochi Raajavu' were the three films that were released on Vishu this year.

'Chandrotsavam' had Mohanlal doing his superhuman role again. The film still would have worked if only it didn't remind the audience of all the other films that he had done before. Meena looked fabulous with her minimal makeup and just about everything else made you want to go out and have a cup of tea.

'Alice in Wonderland' was frankly lost in the battle of superstars Mohanlal and Mammooty. An unusual story and two good-looking heroines couldn't save the film.

The trouble with 'Kochi Raajavu' was - Dileep has a lot of work to do before he gets into action films. And, if he wants the audience to accept him in the 'hero-with-a-terrible-past' kind of roles, he still has light-years to go.

Kochi Rajavu
Cast Dileep, Rambha, Kavya Madhavan, Harisri Asokan
Music Vidhyasagar
Camera Salu George
Director Johnny Antony

Review
When ex-convict Surya Narayana Varma aka Unni (Dileep), steps out of Central jail after serving a five year sentence, he is met by his family who whisk him away to Chennai, away from his blood-thirsty enemies.
At the Chennai Law College, he finds himself amidst two rivals, the college hero Shiva and bad boy Muthu. Shiva’s sister Meenakshi (Rambha) falls in love with Unni; it is time for a flashback. Back home he was a law college student in love with medical student Aswathy (Kavya).
Aswathy lives with her maternal uncles, one of whom has an eye on the vast property she has inherited from her late parents and plans to get his son married to her. But Aswathy has other plans and attempts to elope with Unni.
In the ensuing scuffle, Unni stabs one of Aswathy’s relatives and is sent to prison for five years. Back in Chennai, under the belief that Aswathy has been married off, Unni gets engaged to Meenakshi. Aswathy sends an SOS. He comes back to Kochi. Meenakshi's father, a nasty politician, joins hands with Aswathy's relatives to bump off Unni.
Dileep does not fit the superhuman image, but is his best in the few comic scenes. Harisri Asokan chips in as Unni’s trusted sidekick Komalan. Rambha and Kavya add glamour to the proceedings. Otherwise, a lacklustre affair that is best avoided.
