2001(?) also this happend, otherwise Kalabhavan Mani would have got the award in the movie

വിഷു ചിത്രങ്ങളില്‍ ഷുവര്‍ ഹിറ്റ് എന്ന് ഏവരും പ്രവചിച്ച ‘ഛോട്ടാമുംബൈ’ കാണാന്‍ പോയത് ഏറെ പ്രതീക്ഷയോടെയാണ്. തിയേറ്ററിലെ ജനസമുദ്രം അക്ഷരാര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ ഞെട്ടിച്ചു. സിനിമ കാണാന്‍ ആവേശത്തോടെ കയറുകയാണവര്‍. മുന്‍പ് പറഞ്ഞുറപ്പിച്ച ടിക്കറ്റില്‍ തിയേറ്ററിനുള്ളില്‍ കയറിപ്പറ്റി.

മോഹന്‍ലാലിന്‍റെ പേര് എഴുതി കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ ഉള്ളതിനെക്കാള്‍ ‘സംവിധാനം - അന്‍‌വര്‍ റഷീദ്’ എന്ന് തെളിഞ്ഞപ്പോഴാണ് തിയേറ്ററൊന്നാകെ ഇളകി മറിയുന്നതു കണ്ടത്. രാജമാണിക്യം എന്ന മെഗാഹിറ്റിന്‍റെ പിന്‍‌ബലത്തില്‍ ആ പേര് സ്ക്രീനില്‍ അത്രമാത്രം ഗാംഭീര്യത്തോടെയാണ് ഉയര്‍ന്നു നിന്നത്. സിനിമ തുടങ്ങി അരമണിക്കൂറിനുള്ളില്‍ പോക്ക് എങ്ങോട്ടാണെന്ന് മനസിലായി. തിരക്കഥാകാരന്‍ തന്‍റെ നര്‍മ്മബോധം(?) അമിതമായി കോരിയൊഴിച്ച് വികലമാക്കിയ സിനിമ.

ബെന്നി പി നായരമ്പലമാണ് ഛോട്ടാമുംബൈയുടെ തിരനാടകം എഴുതി ചിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. കൊച്ചിയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിലുള്ള കഥ പറച്ചില്‍. ഹാസ്യത്തിലൂടേ ഒരു അധോലോക കഥ. ശ്രമം ഒക്കെ നന്നായി. എന്നാല്‍ കഥ പറഞ്ഞു ഫലിപ്പിക്കുന്നതില്‍ അമ്പേ പരാജയം! ഫലമോ, ഇടിച്ചു കയറിയ പ്രേക്ഷകന്‍ ചുക്കിച്ചുളിഞ്ഞ മുഖവുമായി തിയേറ്റര്‍ വിടുന്ന കാഴ്ച. സിനിമ കൈവിട്ടു പോയതിന് ഉത്തരവാദിത്തം തിരക്കഥയ്ക്ക് മാത്രമാണെന്ന് ഉറപ്പിച്ചു പറയാം.

വാസ്കോഡഗാമ എന്നാണ് മോഹന്‍ലാലിന്‍റെ കഥാപാത്രത്തിന് കല്പിച്ചു കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന നാമധേയം. ‘തല’ എന്ന് സുഹൃത്തുക്കള്‍ വിളിക്കും. കൊച്ചിയില്‍ ചില്ലറ തരികിടയുമായി നടക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഗ്രൂപ്പിന്‍റെ ‘തല’യാണവന്‍. ഗ്രൂപ്പ് എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ എന്തിനും പോന്ന ഗ്രൂപ്പ്. തലയ്‌ക്കു വേണ്ടി എന്തും ചെയ്യുന്ന ഗ്രൂപ്പ്. മോഹന്‍ലാലിന്‍റെ ഇന്‍‌ട്രൊഡക്ഷന്‍ സീനൊക്കെ ആരാധകരെ കയ്യിലെടുക്കും വിധമാണ്. പൊലീസ് സ്റ്റേഷനിലെ കുറ്റവാളികളുടെ ഫോട്ടോകള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന തലയുടെ ചിത്രം കാണുമ്പോള്‍ ആരവമുയര്‍ത്തുകയാണ് പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍. പക്ഷേ ഈ ആരവങ്ങളൊക്കെ കുറച്ചു നിമിഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ ഇല്ലാതാകുന്നു.

നായകനുള്‍പ്പടെ വ്യക്തിത്വമില്ലാത്ത ഒട്ടേറെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ കുത്തി നിറച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ് ചിത്രത്തില്‍. പതിവ് നായികാ സങ്കല്‍പ്പത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് അല്പം വ്യതിചലിച്ചെങ്കിലും ഭാവന അവതരിപ്പിച്ച ‘പറക്കും ലത’യ്ക്കും കാര്യമായൊന്നും ചെയ്യാനില്ല. കാര്‍ണിവലിന്‍റെ പശ്ചാത്തലം ചിത്രത്തിന് ഒരു ഉത്സവ പ്രതീതി നല്‍കുന്നു. ഒരു കാര്‍ണിവലില്‍ തുടങ്ങി മറ്റൊരു കാര്‍ണിവലില്‍ അവസാനിക്കുന്നു. ‘ലത + തല’ കൂട്ടുകെട്ട് കുറച്ചു നേരം ചിരിക്കുള്ള വക നല്‍കുന്നുണ്ട്.

രണ്ടുമണിക്കൂര്‍ 35 മിനിട്ടാണ് ഛോട്ടാമുംബൈയുടെ ദൈര്‍ഘ്യം. വയലാര്‍ ശരത്‌ചന്ദ്രവര്‍മ്മയുടെ വരികള്‍ക്ക് രാഹുല്‍ രാജ് ഈണം നല്‍കിയ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ഇതില്‍ ഇരുപത് മിനിട്ടോളം അപഹരിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അപഹരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു തന്നെ പറയണം, ആസ്വാദനക്ഷമമല്ല ഒരു ഗാനവും. സിന്ധു എന്ന പഴയ ചിത്രത്തിലെ ‘ചെട്ടികുളങ്ങര’ എന്ന ഫാസ്റ്റ് നമ്പര്‍ റീമിക്സ് ചെയ്ത് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പഴയ ഗാനത്തിന്‍റെ ശില്‍പ്പികള്‍ ഈ പാട്ട് കേള്‍ക്കാതിരിക്കട്ടെ എന്ന് പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിക്കാം.

രാജമാണിക്യത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് സാങ്കേതികമികവില്‍ ഏറെ മുന്നേറിയിയിട്ടുണ്ട് ഈ ചിത്രത്തില്‍ അന്‍‌വര്‍ റഷീദ്. എന്നാല്‍ കഥ തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നതിലും അവതരണത്തിന്‍റെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലും സംവിധായകന്‍ തോല്‍‌വിയടഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. രാജമാണിക്യത്തില്‍ മമ്മൂട്ടിയുടെ അച്ഛനായി വന്ന സായികുമാര്‍ ഈ സിനിമയില്‍ മോഹന്‍ലാലിന്‍റെ പിതാവാണ്. സിദ്ദിഖ് ഏറെ നാളുകള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം കോമഡി ചെയ്യുന്ന കാഴ്ചയും കണ്ടു ഛോട്ടാമുംബൈയില്‍.
